MEMPHIS — Tami Sawyer, the elected Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk, appeared in U.S. District Court in Memphis on Monday for her initial appearance and arraignment. A federal indictment dated June 11 charges Sawyer with misappropriating approximately $44,607.35 in county funds between August 29, 2024, and June 22, 2025.

Federal prosecutors allege Sawyer used county procurement cards and travel advances for personal purchases, including alcohol. The indictment alleges she accessed cards assigned to three employees without authorization.

Prosecutors allege she provided false expense explanations and altered receipts. She allegedly failed to repay a travel card balance and obtained advances for canceled trips without returning funds. The indictment alleges a fund transfer scheme routing money to personal accounts. Charges include conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and theft concerning federal funds.

Sawyer's attorney, John Keith Perry, stated that she denies the allegations. "She is not guilty of these charges. We have not had a chance to go through and dissect every aspect of the law on it, but like I said, she's not guilty, and we're going to keep going forward," Perry said. Perry added that she intends to remain in office while contesting the charges. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.

No independent assessment of Tami Sawyer’s claims was available.
