LAS VEGAS — Boxer Floyd Mayweather is facing two felony criminal charges related to the purchase of an Audemars Piguet watch in December 2024. The charges allege that Mayweather used a check with insufficient funds to purchase the watch from the Las Vegas retailer Gold & Beyond.
The theft charge states that Mayweather purchased the watch while allegedly knowing the check would not be paid. The two charges are for theft and drawing or passing a check with intent to defraud.
The retailer filed a formal complaint with Nevada authorities in February. Clark County prosecutors then filed a criminal complaint regarding the incident on April 27. Marc Cook, an attorney for Gold & Beyond, said, "The reason for the delay is that my guy trusted Mayweather and was trying to give him every opportunity to make good on that. And it got to the point where he wasn't getting responses and wasn't getting money for a watch that Mayweather had for well over a year." Mayweather received a court order to appear before a judge on April 30, though his attorney appeared on his behalf.
A conviction for the bad check charge can result in a maximum penalty of four years in prison, restitution, and a $5,000 fine. The felony theft charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $15,000 fine. Mayweather retired from professional boxing after winning a 2017 match against Conor McGregor, finishing with a record of 50 wins and 0 losses. He has since participated in at least eight exhibition matches.
