Cleveland Guardians third baseman José Ramírez sustained a fractured left hamate bone during a game against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, June 13. Imaging tests conducted after the game confirmed the fracture diagnosis.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt confirmed the injury following a 3-1 victory at Progressive Field. Ramírez injured the bone in the fifth inning after hitting a foul pop-up to Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler and exited the field before the sixth inning.
Vogt said the injury occurred on the swing. Vogt said, "It was the swing on the popup. He felt it. We don't know the logistics or the timing." He said, "He tried to go back out. He couldn't squeeze his glove. Hosey wanted to get back out there to help us win that game, and just couldn't."
Ramírez previously fractured his right hamate bone in August 2019, which required surgery and sidelined him for one month. Surgical intervention for hamate bone fractures typically requires a recovery period of six to eight weeks. Prior to the injury, Ramírez flied out to Tigers left fielder Riley Greene in the first inning and hit a double in the third inning.
Ramírez is a 33-year-old switch-hitter and a seven-time All-Star. Daniel Schneemann is projected to start at third base while Ramírez is sidelined. The Guardians currently hold a 39-33 record and lead the American League Central division by half a game.
Guardians catcher Austin Hedges addressed Ramírez's impact on the team. Hedges said, "Obviously, Hosey for years and years and years has carried us, but what makes us great is the rest of the guys that feed off of his energy and the leader that he is. He makes everybody around him great. So, now it's those guys' turn to pick him up like he always does for us."
Guardians first baseman Kyle Manzardo also commented on Ramírez's absence. Manzardo said, "We are going to have to grind without him for a little bit, but knowing him I know he is going to do everything he can to get back out there as quick as possible."
