Google released the official Android 17 operating system for Pixel phones, coinciding with a software update package called the June Pixel Drop. The company also released Wear OS 7 for Pixel Watches, which is based on the Android 17 architecture.

Android 17 allows users to open applications as floating windows by long-pressing an app icon. These floating app windows remain visible on top of other applications when minimized. On foldable devices, such windows dock into a bar positioned at the bottom of the screen. The new operating system also includes native screen reaction video support, which records front-camera video simultaneously with screen content.

The updated Find Hub feature allows missing devices to be locked using biometric authentication in addition to a passcode. Android 17 reduces the maximum number of allowed passcode guesses and extends the waiting period between failed attempts. The operating system also allows applications to request temporary location access and enables contact access permissions to be restricted to specific address book entries. Android 17 includes parental content filtering and screen time tools that can be configured with a PIN without requiring a linked Google account.

The Gemini Omni model is available in the Gemini app on Pixel devices for generating videos from text prompts. This feature requires a paid Gemini Pro or Ultra subscription. The Lyria 3 music generation model is also available in the Gemini app on Pixel devices, but it does not require a paid subscription.

Quick Share file sharing will be compatible with Apple AirDrop on Pixel 8a and Pixel 9a devices. An automated call screening feature that records custom outgoing messages will expand to all devices from the Pixel 6 series onward in most regions. Conversational editing in Google Photos will become available in the U.K., Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.

Wear OS 7 provides up to a 10 percent increase in battery life for Pixel Watches. It also enables the watches to display live notifications from third-party applications and adds an audio source selection feature previously available on phones. Wear OS 7 will automatically contact emergency services and designated contacts if a device detects a car crash, severe fall, or absent pulse.

The update will be compatible with devices ranging from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 10. Users can install Android 17 manually by downloading full system images or OTA files from developer portals. A gaming interface that displays a touchscreen controller on the lower half and the game on the upper half of the screen will be released several months after the initial launch. Google plans a subsequent update in late 2026, focusing on application programming interfaces and developer tools. The Pause Point screen time management tool is also scheduled for release later in 2026. Wear OS 7 will introduce AI-assisted widget creation and multi-step application automation features in the coming months. Third-party manufacturers including Samsung, Motorola, and OnePlus will release the software for their devices later in 2026.
