NEVADA — Jim Marchant won the Republican nomination for Nevada secretary of state. The office oversees voting procedures in the state.

Marchant claimed he and Donald Trump were victims of election fraud in 2020. Reviewers found no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 elections in Nevada. Marchant also claimed mail ballots are fraudulent. Public records confirm that Marchant used a mail ballot to vote while registered as a voter in Florida.

Marchant attended a December 2020 meeting with six Nevada Republicans who signed alternate electoral certificates claiming Donald Trump won the state. Six Nevada Republicans face charges filed by the state attorney general's office for submitting alternate electoral certificates in 2020. The office of the 2020 secretary of state reviewed multiple fraud allegations and determined they were baseless or under review.

Marchant defeated Shirley Folkins-Roberts and Sharron Angle in the Republican primary. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo endorsed Folkins-Roberts for secretary of state. Folkins-Roberts publicly denied widespread fraud occurred in Nevada elections. Folkins-Roberts conceded the Republican primary race.

Marchant proposed changes to election procedures if elected, including eliminating electronic voting machines in Nevada. He also proposed ending universal mail ballots and requiring hand-counted paper ballots. Campaign finance reports show Marchant raised and spent no campaign funds before the primary election. Folkins-Roberts reported spending approximately $11,000 on her primary campaign, while Angle reported spending $20,000.

Cisco Aguilar ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for secretary of state. Aguilar is the current Democratic secretary of state. He defeated Marchant in the previous secretary of state election. The winner of the November general election will oversee the 2028 presidential election in Nevada. Nevada voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, and for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election by more than 33,000 votes.

Aguilar advocated for legislation making it a felony to harass election officials. He oversaw the implementation of a new voter registration and election management system in Nevada and established a polling location at Allegiant Stadium during the 2024 election. A voter identification requirement appeared on the Nevada 2024 ballot and will appear again on the November ballot. Aguilar stated he will work with state and local officials to implement the voter identification measure.
