LIMEIRA — Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died Saturday after falling from the Skeleton Bridge during a rope jumping activity in Limeira, Brazil. She fell approximately 40 meters to the ground and emergency medical responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Freitas was not attached to a safety cord during the jump, according to video footage of the incident. The footage shows two individuals hoisting Freitas by her arms while a third person supported her legs as she was launched from the bridge. The instructors involved in the jump wore harnesses that appeared to be attached to a security rope.

Authorities brought six individuals to the Limeira Police District for questioning after the incident. Police arrested three men, aged 27, 32, and 42, on charges of homicide with eventual intent. Under Brazilian law, this charge applies when perpetrators engage in a dangerous act with a fatal risk, but without direct intent to kill.

"According to the police report, at the time of the jump, the safety equipment was not properly fixed," An official statement from the São Paulo Governor's Office said. "The victim did not resist the fall and death was confirmed by emergency medical service teams," the statement said. "A team that was not regulated and lacked authorization to be there conducted the jump," Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy said.

Freitas' fiancé was present and observed the incident. Prior to the event, Freitas posted on her Instagram, "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?" She studied physical education and sports management.

The Skeleton Bridge, also known as Ponte do Esqueleto, is located on the municipal border between Limeira and Cordeirópolis and falls under federal jurisdiction. Rope jumping uses a low-stretch cord for a pendulum swing, differentiating it from bungee jumping's elastic cord for a vertical bounce. The City of Limeira announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Brazilian federal government for failing to manage the bridge.
