INDIANAPOLIS — Dennis Reinbold, founder of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Dreyer & Reinbold automobile dealerships, died at age 65 on Saturday surrounded by his family. His death was announced on Sunday by the racing team, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the dealerships.

Reinbold founded the racing team in 1999. The team began racing full-time in the IndyCar series in 2000. Driver Robbie Buhl won the 2000 IndyCar season-opening race at Walt Disney World for the team, which remains the team's only victory in the IndyCar series.

The racing team fielded cars in the Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar series for more than 25 years. All 53 cars entered by the team in the Indianapolis 500 qualified for the starting field. In the most recent Indianapolis 500, the team's cars finished 12th and 22nd.

Reinbold also built a family of automobile dealerships across Indiana. The dealerships, which include BMW, Infiniti, Mini, Subaru, and Volkswagen brands, operate in Indianapolis and Greenwood.

"We are heartbroken to share the news that our owner, leader, and friend, Dennis Reinbold, has passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family," the team said. "We are determined to carry on his legacy of excellence with the dealerships," Brian Gauker, general manager for the dealerships, said. "There is no better way to honor Dennis and his passion for our sport than to make him proud on the race track, and off it," Chase Selman, general manager for the team, said. "We ask race fans to join us in remembering the man, his passion for our sport, and the memories we shared," Selman said.
