KATY — A 45-year-old man was fatally shot during a physical altercation at a gathering in Katy early Sunday. The incident prompted the Harris County Sheriff's Office to dispatch deputies to the 24600 block of Sandal Springs at approximately 12:15 a.m. for a reported disturbance.

While the initial 911 caller remained on the line, gunshots were reported outside the residence. Officers arriving at the location found the man deceased.

Multiple individuals participated in the physical altercation. One participant exited the altercation, obtained a firearm from a parked vehicle, and discharged it at the victim multiple times. Recovered video footage shows that the individual who discharged the firearm had actively participated in the preceding altercation. The shooter specifically directed fire at the victim rather than discharging the weapon randomly into the crowd.

Attendees at the gathering primarily consisted of family members alongside non-family guests. The shooter was not a relative of the victim or affiliated with the party hosts. Law enforcement is withholding the victim's identification until next of kin notification is complete. Authorities are attempting to establish the shooter's identity and will release identifying information if an arrest warrant is secured.
