WASHINGTON, D.C. — Trump is asking Congress to pass a resolution to expunge his two impeachments from his first term. White House officials are urging congressional progress on the impeachment expungement resolution.

The Constitution does not contain a procedure for reversing or undoing an impeachment. Any congressional resolution seeking to expunge an impeachment would function as a political statement rather than a binding legal action.

Rep. Ted Lieu commented on the request. "As a former impeachment manager, I plead with you to please bring up Trump's prior impeachments." Lieu said. "Let's hold hearings, call witnesses and show videos to remind people what happened. And please make every Republican in a swing district vote on this."

Sen. Adam Schiff also issued a statement regarding the action. "There is no expunging the stain of Trump's two impeachments." Schiff said.

Trump was first impeached in 2019 over allegations that he pressured Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden. The Senate acquitted him of those charges in February 2020. He was impeached a second time following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and the Senate acquitted him after he left office following that impeachment.

Trump has characterized his two impeachments as politically motivated actions by opponents and government institutions. He is the third president to be impeached, following Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998, both of whom were acquitted by the Senate. Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before the House voted on articles of impeachment related to the Watergate scandal. Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
