BOSTON — A Suffolk County jury convicted Alvin Campbell, 45, of 21 out of 22 counts related to sexual assaults that occurred in Boston between 2017 and 2019. The jury deadlocked on one rape charge.
Campbell is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29 and faces potential life imprisonment for an aggravated rape conviction. Prosecutors alleged that Campbell targeted intoxicated women outside bars in Boston between 2017 and 2019, posing as a rideshare driver. Police stated that DNA evidence linked Campbell to the alleged assaults.
Trial proceedings began on May 18, and jurors started deliberations on June 4. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden addressed reporters following the verdict. The District Attorney's office stated it would determine future steps regarding the deadlocked charge at a later date.
Prosecutor Erin Murphy stated, "Alvin Campbell had a plan. Night after night, Alvin Campbell drove his car into downtown Boston late at night when the cars were winding down, and he looked for targets, the same type over and over again." Kevin Hayden, Suffolk County District Attorney, said, "Alvin Campbell deceivingly and calculatedly preyed upon women in their most vulnerable moments."
Defense attorney Andrew Courossi contended, "The commonwealth will fail to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a kidnapping occurred, and it will also fail to prove that what occurred between one victim and Mr. Campbell was anything other than consensual sex." Hayden added, "We are happy that we were able to secure justice and accountability for them and so we thank them."
