BANGKOK — Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol died at the age of 47 in a Bangkok hospital. The Bureau of the Royal Household announced her death in a statement issued on Friday.
The Princess was hospitalized in December 2022 after falling unconscious while training dogs for an army exhibition. In early May, palace statements indicated her condition worsened due to multiple organ infections and a failure of physicians to stabilize an irregular heart rate. Physicians diagnosed a stomach infection in April that caused intestinal inflammation, a drop in blood pressure, and heart irregularities. She received medical equipment support for kidney function and breathing.
She was born on December 7, 1978, to then Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Princess Soamsawali. She earned a doctorate in law from Cornell University in 2005. She also worked as a public prosecutor in the Thai attorney general's office.
She served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014. In 2017, she was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime. She founded the Kamlangjai project, which supports the rehabilitation of incarcerated women. Her advocacy contributed to the U.N. General Assembly adopting the Bangkok Rules, which concern care conditions for female prisoners.
In a 2013 interview, she said, "Society cannot grow if there is instability and injustice. Without the rule of law, without a good justice system, it's always chaos. I think the rule of law is a very important pillar to development, to economic growth, and of course to human rights."
