YANGON — A Thai woman appeared in a Myanmar court on Thursday to face murder charges in connection with the death of an American diplomat. The court proceeding took place at the Kamayut Township Court.

The woman faces charges of murder and a violation of Myanmar's immigration code regarding foreign nationals who commit crimes in the country. A murder conviction carries a potential sentence ranging from ten years in prison to the death penalty.

The American diplomat was found dead on May 11 at the Sakura Residence & Hotel in Yangon. The diplomat sustained stab wounds to the head and neck. The hotel is located approximately 1.5 kilometers from the U.S. Embassy.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the diplomat's death. It declined to release the diplomat's name or provide further details. The U.S. Embassy in Myanmar reiterated the State Department's statement and directed additional questions to local authorities.

The woman has not entered a plea. It is unconfirmed whether she had legal representation during the hearing. Thailand's Foreign Ministry stated it is providing consular assistance to the detained woman, but it did not confirm whether it provided legal assistance for the court hearing. The Thai embassy in Myanmar declined to comment by telephone and did not respond to written inquiries.

Police, prison officials, and court personnel declined to comment on the investigation or custody of the suspect. The military seized power from the administration of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.
