Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, confidentially filed for an initial public offering after raising $65 billion in a recent funding round. This funding round valued the company at $965 billion. Dario Amodei, Anthropic's cofounder and chief executive officer, stated in a February interview that he dedicates a large portion of his time to ensuring the company's culture.
Amodei said, "I probably spend a third, maybe 40%, of my time making sure the culture of Anthropic is good." The company employs approximately 2,500 people.
Amodei hosts a biweekly company-wide meeting called DVQ, which stands for Dario Vision Quest. During these meetings, he speaks for an hour, using a three- or four-page document to discuss product strategy, geopolitics, and the artificial intelligence industry. He also maintains an internal messaging channel to respond to employee questions and share his thoughts throughout the week.
The company announced a $200 million investment to research the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs and the economy. This investment will establish an Economic Futures Research Fund to support research trials and program evaluations of public policies. The company also removed a pledge from its Responsible Scaling Policy that committed to halting AI training at specific capability thresholds unless safety measures were guaranteed. The company attributed this policy change to competitive pressures and a lack of regulations.
Amodei published an essay proposing government economic support for individuals financially impacted by artificial intelligence. He wrote, "The key challenge in such a world won’t be incentivizing growth, but finding a way for everyone to share in the benefits." His proposals included improved data collection for tracking job displacement, employment policy incentives to reduce displacement, and the implementation of universal basic income if displacement permanently reduces labor demand. He suggested funding universal basic income through taxes on relevant companies or by raising the capital gains tax. The company also proposed an economic policy framework addressing government responses to three levels of AI-driven unemployment: 5 percent, 10 percent, and an unspecified unprecedented level.
Additionally, the company is establishing a $150 million national fellowship program for early-career professionals to extend artificial intelligence benefits across the United States. Amodei has one direct report who serves as his chief of staff.
No independent assessment of Dario Amodei’s claims was available.
