Meta Platforms Inc. began distributing a second round of privacy settlement payments to Facebook users on June 9, 2026. This action follows a $725 million resolution of lawsuits concerning unauthorized data sharing.
The settlement addresses multiple lawsuits alleging that Facebook shared user information with third parties, including advertisers and data brokers, without securing user permission. Plaintiffs in the case claimed the platform did not monitor or enforce third-party access to the data they received. The origin of these lawsuits relates to a 2018 privacy incident that involved Cambridge Analytica, which collected user data from Facebook to create voter profiles. In the settlement, Meta denied all liability and wrongdoing.
Court documents indicated that the settlement was established to avoid the costs and risks associated with a trial and to distribute payments to class members. The initial settlement payments were issued in September 2025. A court filing reported that the average amount for the first payment was $29.43. The payment amounts were determined by the duration of each user's Facebook activity during a 15-year qualifying period and the total number of claims filed.
A court approved the initiation of a second distribution, utilizing funds that were returned from uncashed checks in the first round. This second distribution is restricted to class members who cashed their initial payments, according to the settlement website. The claims administrator is sending email notifications to those individuals who qualify for an additional payment. These notification emails will use the subject line: "Facebook User Privacy Settlement – Settlement and Second Distribution Status Update."
The distribution of the second payments is scheduled to continue for four weeks, with funds being sent out in batches. The claims administrator stated, "You will receive an additional email notice approximately 3-4 days before your additional settlement payment is issued. Please continue to check your email during this time period." Recipients can verify the status of their second payment by emailing info@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com and providing their claim identification number.
