CALIFORNIA — The California gubernatorial primary remained too early to call with 50% of the expected vote counted. In the all-party primary, Steve Hilton had 27% support, Xavier Becerra had 26%, Tom Steyer had 20%, and Chad Bianco had 11%.

Hilton, a former Fox News host, is a Republican candidate in the race. Becerra, a former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, is running as a Democrat.

Tom Steyer is a billionaire activist and Democratic candidate in California’s gubernatorial primary. Chad Bianco is the Republican Riverside County Sheriff and a candidate in the race.

The primary uses California’s top-two system, in which all candidates appear on the same ballot regardless of party, and the two highest vote-getters advance to the general election. With the current results separated by just one percentage point between the top two contenders, the outcome remains uncertain as additional ballots are tallied.

Election officials have not projected a winner, and campaigns are awaiting further vote counts from counties across the state. The close margin between Hilton and Becerra suggests the final determination of who advances could hinge on absentee and provisional ballots still being processed.
