LONDON — The All England Club is scheduled to announce details of the 2024 Wimbledon prize fund at a press conference on 11 June. The announcement follows a meeting at Roland Garros on Monday between Wimbledon officials and the world’s leading tennis players, who said they expect a substantial increase beyond the 7% rise awarded in 2023.
Players are seeking for grand slam tournaments to allocate 22% of tournament revenue to prize money, matching the percentage paid by the ATP and WTA Tours. Grand slam events currently distribute about 15% of their revenue in prize money.
Wimbledon’s total prize fund in 2023 was £53.5 million, higher than the French Open’s 2024 fund of £52.6 million. Players expressed disappointment at the French Open’s 9.5% prize money increase, which prompted their first public protest. World No. 1 players Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka limited their pre-tournament media availability to 15 minutes in a coordinated demonstration.
Wimbledon’s prize fund in 2023 was double the amount offered in 2013. Over the same decade, the All England Club’s revenues increased from £170 million to £406.5 million.
Wimbledon and US Open officials held separate meetings with players on Monday and made positive statements about the discussions. A source with knowledge of the discussions described the talks as “direct and productive.” The source said the tournaments showed a clear understanding of demands for a fairer share of revenues for prize money, contributions to player welfare, and a genuine consultation process.
