New York Mets team president David Stearns is expected to make a firm decision by July 27, 2026, on whether the club will be buyers or sellers ahead of the August 3 Major League Baseball trade deadline. The Mets entered June with a 26-34 record and were in last place in the National League East as of early June 2026.
According to Tim Britton, Mets reporter for The Athletic, the team must go 27-19 over its next 46 games to position itself as a buyer at the deadline. "Anything less than that, and they’re almost certain to be sellers," Britton wrote. Achieving that win-loss record would leave the Mets with a 52-54 overall mark by July 27.
The path to that target appears challenging given the strength of their remaining schedule. Only nine of the team’s next 46 games are scheduled against opponents with sub-.500 records as of early June.
The Mets’ difficult start to the 2026 season has been compounded by major injuries to key players, including shortstop Francisco Lindor and relief pitcher Clay Holmes.
One of the nine series against sub-.500 teams is against the Toronto Blue Jays, the defending American League champions.
With just over two months until the trade deadline, the next six weeks will be pivotal in shaping the franchise’s direction. If the Mets fall short of the 27-19 benchmark, a sell-off of veteran assets could be imminent as Stearns evaluates the club’s long-term trajectory.
