INDIANAPOLIS — Rick Treadway died in a motorcycle crash on Saturday, May 30, at the age of 56. Details about the crash were not released.
Treadway competed in 11 IndyCar Series races between 2001 and 2002, making his debut in 2001 and his final start in 2002 at Texas Motor Speedway. "The Indy 500 start was the highlight of Treadway’s INDYCAR SERIES career, which consisted of 11 races in the 2001 and 2002 seasons for his father’s teams Treadway-Hubbard Racing and Treadway Racing," a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said.
In the 2002 Indianapolis 500, Treadway drove the No. 5 Sprint/Kyocera Wireless/Airlink Enterprises G Force/Chevrolet, fielded by his father Fred Treadway’s team. He was teammates with two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk. Treadway started 17th and finished 29th after being eliminated in a Lap 90 crash in Turn 3 alongside Tony Kanaan.
Before joining the IndyCar Series, Rick Treadway had competed in Formula 2000 junior formula racing. "Sad news hearing Rick Treadway passed away last Saturday. Our condolences go out to my former @IndyCar team owner Fred Treadway, Janice and Brian Treadway. Rick was a fun, crazy, humble, wild and brave personality," Luyendyk said.
