U.S. — Anthropic took its AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline after the Trump administration issued an export control order citing national security concerns. The order required Anthropic to ensure the models could not be used by foreign nationals.
Anthropic stated it pulled the models entirely because it could not distinguish foreign nationals among its user base and employees. Fable 5 was available to the public, while Mythos 5 was available to current Mythos users. Anthropic released the public version of Fable 5 on June 9 and later stated on June 12 that the government did not provide specific details regarding the national security concern.
Reports indicated that Amazon researchers found a way to bypass Fable 5's guardrails. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy subsequently raised concerns about this guardrail bypass to the White House. Anthropic stated that similar jailbreaks could have been found in several other AI models.
The Department of Defense labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk. This occurred after Anthropic disagreed with the Pentagon over requested modifications to its AI systems' guardrails for military use. Cybersecurity experts signed an open letter asking President Trump to revoke the export control order.
President Trump commented on the situation at the G7 summit, stating that negotiations with Anthropic are "going fine." He also stated in an interview that he no longer views Anthropic as a national security threat. When asked if he had viewed the company as a threat a week prior, Trump said, "Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe." Trump delayed an executive order, expressing concern it would impede American AI innovation.
Jessica Tillipman, associate dean for government procurement law at George Washington University, stated, "The problem is not that the government exercised discretion; national security demands such latitude." She added, "What is striking is the absence of any meaningful process." Brad Carson, head of Public First, stated, "Right now, you have an ad hoc, personalized, opaque, possibly lawless approach."
